Enrichment opportunities across the curriculum
Technology
At Southern Cross Public School, we are committed to creating a dynamic learning environment where technology enhances teaching and empowers students to succeed in a digital world. We see technology as a tool to support learning — not distract from it — helping students build the digital competence and confidence they need for the future.
Technology is woven throughout our curriculum to make learning engaging, interactive, and meaningful. Students use interactive whiteboards, digital books, and virtual laboratories to explore new ideas and deepen their understanding through hands-on experiences.
We also use technology to personalise learning and make it accessible for every student. Digital tools such as text-to-speech software, adjustable fonts, and online platforms allow teachers to tailor lessons and assessments to meet individual needs and learning styles.
Collaboration and communication are central to our approach. Students work together on projects using platforms like Google Drive and Microsoft Teams, connecting with peers both within and beyond our school community.
To help students develop strong digital skills, we provide opportunities to create digital content using tools such as Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud, and engage with technology that mirrors real-world applications.
Extension Maths
At Southern Cross Public School, we are committed to nurturing the talents and potential of every learner. As part of our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) program, selected students in Stages 2 and 3 have the opportunity to participate in small mathematics groups designed to extend and challenge their thinking.
These enrichment groups engage students in advanced mathematical concepts, complex problem-solving, and collaborative inquiry, allowing them to explore mathematics in greater depth and with increased independence. Through rich and stimulating learning experiences, students are encouraged to think critically, share ideas, and develop a genuine passion for mathematical discovery.
Our goal is to inspire confident, creative, and capable learners who can apply their mathematical understanding to real-world contexts and future learning opportunities.
Choir
At Southern Cross Public School, we believe in providing students with opportunities to express themselves creatively and develop confidence through the performing arts. Students in Years 3–6 are invited to join our school choir, where they can explore their love of music, build teamwork skills, and share their talents with the school community.
The choir provides an inclusive and supportive environment that aligns with the NSW Department of Education’s Creative Arts curriculum, helping students develop musical skills such as rhythm, pitch, harmony, and performance. Through regular rehearsals and performances, students learn the value of commitment, cooperation, and creative expression.
Each year, selected students may also have the opportunity to audition for the NSW Public Schools Primary Choral Concert in Sydney, representing our school as part of a combined choir of talented singers from across the state.
Participation in the choir helps students grow in confidence, celebrate their achievements, and experience the joy of making music together.
Band
At Southern Cross Public School, students have the opportunity to develop their musical skills and creativity through our school band program. Students have the opportunity to participate in weekly private lessons in flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and saxophone, taught by Fiona Clarke, with rehearsals and performances coordinated by school staff.
Aligned with the NSW Department of Education’s Creative Arts curriculum, the band fosters teamwork, confidence, and a love of music while giving students the chance to perform and grow as young musicians.
Creative Arts Camp
At Southern Cross Public School, students in Years 4–6 who demonstrate high-level skill in Music, Dance, Drama, or Visual Arts are encouraged to extend their talents through our Creative Arts Enrichment Program.
Aligned with the North Coast Creative Arts Camp, this program provides rich opportunities for students to explore their creativity, collaborate with peers, and develop confidence through advanced artistic experiences. It supports students to think critically, express themselves, and grow as young artists.
Amplify Music Program
Our school delivers the NSW Music curriculum using the Amplify program — a high-quality, online resource that ensures every student receives a consistent and engaging music education.
The program provides a structured, school-wide approach that builds students’ musical knowledge and skills through year-on-year progression. Using evidence-based, high-impact teaching strategies, Amplify supports the delivery of lessons that meet all curriculum outcomes while inspiring a lifelong appreciation for music.
Through singing, listening, and creating, students experience the joy of music while developing confidence, creativity, and collaboration skills in every classroom.
Dance Group
At Southern Cross Public School, our Dance Group gives students the opportunity to express themselves creatively through movement and performance. Aligned with the NSW Creative Arts syllabus, the program helps students develop coordination, rhythm, and confidence while exploring how dance can communicate ideas and emotions.
Through rehearsals and performances, students build teamwork skills, learn choreographed routines, and experience the joy of performing as part of a supportive and creative group.
