2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Premier highlights the value of public education

Public education can be the springboard to the top job in New South Wales.

That was the message from the Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, as she launched Education Week celebrations today at Parramatta and Kiama public schools.

"I know that all schools across the state today are highlighting and celebrating what we all value in public education – where someone like me who couldn't speak a word of English when she started school has somehow ended up being the Premier of NSW," she said.

Ms Berejiklian said she had met many possible future leaders during her visit to Parramatta Public School and "couldn't be prouder, as your Premier, to witness the outstanding achievements of all the students across the state".

The dual school launch, linked via a live simulcast, focused on the theme of Education Week, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, which highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the launch was hosted entirely by primary school students and featured student performances from Eastwood Public School violinist Justine Zhang, Bossley Park High School soloist Ezra Loau and dancers from Hoxton Park Public School.

Year 8 students from Kiama High School – Alira Morgan, Jannali Morgan and Olivia Talbott – opened the celebration with an Acknowledgement of Country performed in language.

Keynote speeches were delivered from Kiama by Terara Public School Year 6 student Lucy Boundy, Molly Chapman, a Year 8 student at Dapto High School, and Nowra East Public School instructional leader Vishanti Govender.

Lucy told the launch that education was about opportunity: "Opportunity to learn, opportunity to improve and opportunity to make a difference."

In detailing her early struggles with learning, Molly said a more hands-on approach to study at her high school had a huge impact on her.

"I learn more effectively by seeing and doing things because it gets in my head more easily and pictures are worth a thousand words. Thanks to school, I'm exceeding in almost everything I touch," she said.

Education Minister Rob Stokes highlighted the "incredible legacy" of public schools on society, a role contemporary education and educators would play in the future.

"We are in a period of vast technological, social and economic change, and with that the role of education becomes more important, even bigger, and the challenge for teachers and students becomes more complex," he said.

"We need to provide training in those skills that recognise the future is uncertain and to train and encourage young people not just to be ready for the change that is coming but to be excited by it."

Education Week 2018 - Today's schools creating tomorrow's world

The future of education will be showcased in NSW public schools from August 6 – 10 as students, teachers and parents across the state celebrate Education Week 2018.

Education Week kicks off on Monday, August 6, with a simultaneous launch at Parramatta and Kiama public schools livestreamed on YouTube so all government schools and their communities can join in.

This year's theme, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the Education Week launch will be hosted by primary school students and will feature a dancing robot, student performances and a film highlighting how schools are working with their communities to solve real-world problems.

A highlight of the week is the Game Changer Challenge, in which 16 teams of students from schools across NSW will compete in a three-day design program, working alongside leading industry professionals to create the school of the future.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said today's students were learning at a time of great change.

"From the far west to our metropolitan hubs and everywhere in between, our state's schools will celebrate not only what we've achieved, but the future we are creating," Ms Berejiklian said.

"We are living in a time when the traditional walls of the classroom are opening up to new worlds of learning, paving the way for students to connect and collaborate with their peers regionally and globally."

Education Minister Rob Stokes said there had never been a more exciting time to be involved in schools with technology reshaping the way students learn and billions of dollars being invested in new school infrastructure.

"The NSW Department of Education is continually striving for improvement and innovation so that the young people in our care learn in a world-class education system," Mr Stokes said.

"The NSW Government is supporting that vision through a record $6 billion in funding to build the classrooms and schools of the future."

The Secretary of the Department of Education Mark Scott said ensuring today's students had the skills they would need to "not just survive, but thrive" in the future underpinned the department's evidence-based approach to learning.

"I am incredibly proud of the innovative teaching and learning that is being done across our State's public schools to ensure that every student can perform to their full potential," Mr Scott said.

"We don't know what the future will hold, but we do know that we are focused on equipping today's students with the skills and knowledge they will need to lead fulfilling lives in the future."

New uniform policy for NSW public schools

A new uniform policy has been introduced for NSW public schools, which for the first time include the option for girls to wear shorts and pants.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, and the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes, announced the new "clear and concise" policy today at Condell Park Public School in Sydney.

Ms Berejiklian said the "modern makeover" would ensure that uniforms were practical and comfortable for students and affordable for parents.

The new policy says all students should have the opportunity to access the full range of school activities while wearing a school uniform, including physical activities, and girls must have the option to wear shorts and pants.

The Department of Education supports the wearing of school uniform to promote a sense of belonging for students and create a positive identity for the school community.

Each public school decides on its school uniform in formal consultation with students, school staff, parents and the school community.

Southern Cross Public School officially begins

Welcome back to an exciting new year and era of Southern Cross Public School.

We officially begin as Southern Cross Public school this year and although we will still have the secondary school of Ballina Coast High remain on site this year, they will be gearing up to move over to their exciting new premises in October this year.

Southern Cross Public School will continue to offer amazing opportunities for our students, families and community and we will be increasing these by establishing Friends of the School this year to ensure that parents and the learning community are engaged in the establishment and improvements of Southern Cross Public School. Canberra Excursion

Year 6 have just returned from their Canberra and Sydney trip. All the students had heaps of fun and learned lots of things. We saw heaps of interesting and important locations, and were lucky to meet the Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove, Queen Elizabeth II representative to Australia.

Year 6 also visited lots of fun and exciting places like Questacon where we learnt about science and used the slide, and Australian Institute of Sport were we learnt about pro sport. We also visited the Zoo, Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, and the Sydney Aquarium.

The War Memorial in Canberra was sad for some students but it was good experience to see what it was like for people fighting in wars and seeing what they used in the fighting (weapons, cloths, eating utensils, letters home). Parliament House in Canberra was really great and everyone enjoyed learning about how to introduce and debate a bill, the Senate and the House of Representatives. We did role plays at Parliament House, the Police and Justice Museum and Old Parliament House.

Thanks to the Teachers (Mrs White, Mr Porter, Mrs Marchant and Mr Maguire) who took us there and put up with us for the whole week. Jessie R.

English with 1V

1V have been reading 'Who Sank the Boat' by Pamela Allen as part of Term 4 Stage 1 English unit. The students were very excited to act out the story and were so good that we decided to perform it as our assembly item. IV added in some fabulous singing of Row Row Row Your Boat where students showed off their ability to sing in a round. They also demonstrated their art skills by helping to paint the displays. Well done 1V!

Gold Rush

Recently students in SCC and SCS have learnt about the Australian gold rush and gold uses throughout time.

Did you know: there is gold in most computers and devices!

Students created maps, applied for a Southern Cross School Gold Mining Licence and were able to fossick for gold and gemstones throughout the school. We have discovered that there is a lot of quartz in our playground! The search for gold continues…

Mini Sports Carnival

Healthy Ears for Kindergarten

On Tuesday 10^th October Kindergarten students were involved in a presentation about the importance of keeping their ears healthy. As well as seeing diagrams and models of the ear and how it works, the need to cough or sneeze into their elbows was reinforced to prevent the spread of germs (you rarely touch things with your elbow as you do with your hand). The students also learnt how to blow their noses correctly so they would not damage their ears, and correct procedures for disposing of tissues and washing hands. All these things are valuable lessons for life.

"It's Electrifying" Science Expo

Stage Three had an a fun filled day circulating around variety of hands on learning activities to wrap up their Term 3 Science unit "It's Electrifying".

The students rotated through a virtual excursion presented by Questacon entitled 'Under the Sea' and 10 stations, which required the students to complete a wide variety of learning activities and tasks that explored electrical circuits powered by batteries, wind, solar and hydro power.

In the afternoon the students presented their electrifying models to Years K-4 and parents. All the students and many parents/carers enjoyed the opportunity to create these fabulous models at home and then present them to everyone.

Premier Reading Challenge 2017

Kindergarten 2018 Transition

Starting school is an important milestone for not only the children, but for the whole family. Our Transition to School Program is equipping children with knowledge and skills to support a successful start to school. Children will become familiar with routines, the school environment and build relationships with peers and teachers.

Kindergarten 2018 Transition students came on Friday 27^th October for a Transition morning. Our Buddies have been helping and building relationships with the new Kindergarten students. We have really enjoyed having all our young eager 2018 Kindergarten students visit and we hope they are looking forward to starting school next year.

Friday 3rd November Kindergarten 2018 students will attend special Kindergarten 2018 classes at school. Please arrive with students by 9:30am and collect at 11:00am.

On Friday 10^th November students will attend at 9:30am and at 10:15am Kindergarten 2018 parents and families are invited to attend our Transition Assembly, where students will receive a special pack and certificate for completing transition.

October Transition Program

Our Transition to School Program continues for Kindergarten 2018 students on Fridays 9:30am to 11:00am for four (4) weeks from 20^th October to 10th November 2017. Parents will also have the opportunity to become familiar with the school during these sessions.

There is a Parent workshop on Friday 20^thOctober between 9:30-11am.

We look forward to spending time with Kindergarten families to support a successful start to school and answer any questions you may have.

Buddy Training

Ms Butt and Mrs Crowley have started to conduct buddy training to prepare our Stage 2 students for the important role. Each Kindergarten student will receive a buddy to support their transition to school.

Performance ‘Step Back’

Thank you to all our families and friends for stepping back through time and attending the Southern Cross School K-2 Concert. The students did a fantastic job and it was great to include the Choir, Band and 3-6 Dance students. It was wonderful to see the big smiles and enjoyment beaming on and off the stage and to involve the audience in the ‘Time Warp'.

We kicked the night off with the band channelling Michael Jackson and the Year 1 performance with special appearances from 80's superstars Madonna, Elton John and Boy George just to name a few. The Choir impressed us with their Opera House numbers while the Kindergartens' stole our hearts with their bow ties, suspenders and a number from Elvis Presley. 3-6 Dance girls picked up the pace with their ‘Chameleon' dance and Year 2 took us back to the 70's with the ‘Twist' and ‘Limbo'.

Thank you to all the teachers that helped with production and those who supervised on the night, it was definitely a great night to remember. Miss Groves

Bunsen Burner Licence for Year 6

Year 6 students have been visiting the Science labs at Ballina Coast High School as part of the transition program into High School. They have recently been learning about the safe operation of using a Bunsen burner and engaging in scientific investigations.

On the 1^st of September Year 9 Peer Leaders from Ballina Coast High were delighted to award the very first Year 6 students with their Bunsen Burner Licence. Usually this is an opportunity only offered to students in Year 7 so this was a very exciting time for all involved.

North Coast Creative Arts Camp

Two students from Southern Cross Public School attended the North Coast Creative Arts Camp at Lake Ainsworth in August. Ava and Lainey participated in the week long camp involving 160 Yrs 4,5 and 6 students from across Northern NSW. Ava took part in the Vocal Ensemble whilst Lainey took part in the Concert Band. Students also got to participate in other creative arts activities including a mass choir.

Congratulations goes to Lainey who worked very hard and was accepted into the NSW State Concert Band for her fantastic application to music and flute playing. Well done Lainey.

Byron Bay Writers Festival Author Talk

On the 3^rd August a group of 40 students from Years 4, 5, and 6 attended the Primary School Day hosted by the Byron Writers Festival at the Ballina RSL. We enjoyed listening to two authors - Tristan Bancks and Hilary Badger. Tristan Bancks writes the ‘My Life' series along with two new books called "The Fall" and "Two Wolves". Hilary Badger uses the pen name H.I. Larry and she writes the Zac Power series. Both authors were very entertaining and after the presentation they signed many books.

Update to Finance

In preparation for a smooth transition CHANGES TO HOW WE ACCEPT PAYMENTS will occur.

Payments to Southern Cross School will NOT be accepted between the following dates:

25 August to 6 September – no payments by EFTPOS or POP.

29 August to 6 September – no cash or cheque payments.

Direct Deposits will no longer be accepted .

Resumption of Payments by EFTPOS, POP, Cash and cheques will occur after the 6 September 2017.

Changes to Payments

Southern Cross School K-6 will transition to the new NSW Public Schools' finance system and a new bank account on 4^th September 2017.

To ensure a smooth transition, there will be changes to the way we accept payments from parents and carers.

Direct deposits: As of 18^th August 2017, we will no longer accept direct deposits into our current school bank account as we prepare to close this account and transition to the new one. Any payments made using direct deposit after this date cannot be properly allocated to a student's account in a timely manner. Please ensure you have made any outstanding direct deposits before 18^th August 2017.
EFTPOS payments: We will not be able to accept EFTPOS payments between 25^th August and 6^th September 2017. Please ensure that you have made any outstanding EFTPOS payments before 25^th August, 2017. From 6^th September 2017, EFTPOS payments will be accepted as before.

Cash and cheque payments: Between 29^th August 2017 and 6^th September 2017, we will also not be able to accept payments by cash or cheque as we prepare to close our current bank account and transition to the new one. Please ensure that you have made any outstanding cash or cheque payments before 29^th August 2017. (From 6^th September 2017, cash and cheque payments will be accepted as before).
Online payments (make a payment tab on Website): As of 25^th August 2017, payments to our current online payment facility will cease. You will not be able to use the Department of Education's Parent Online Payment (POP) system until Wednesday 6^th September.

NR Science and Engineering Discovery Day

In the last week of Term 2 thirty two enthusiastic Year 6 students competed in ‘The Northern Rivers Science and Engineering Discovery Day', which is a much anticipated event on our Year 6 calendar.

The increasingly popular event is held at Southern Cross University in Lismore, which in itself is an inspiration to the participating students. Each team of 4 students completes 2 set challenges during the day and are mentored and scored by university staff and students. Our Year 6 students must be congratulated on their cooperative and problem solving skills which combined to make the Southern Cross School students the winners of the day. All students can be justly proud of their performance and achievements.

For students who are interested the SCU Robotics Hub meets every Thursday 3.30pm to 5.30pm at Southern Cross University, Lismore Campus, Level , A Block.

PSSA Representative Sport

Congratulation to all who have participated in PSSA representative sports. We have had some outstanding results in all trials and championships and all competitors have been complimented for their sportsmanship and behaviour.

The Far North Coast Cross Country Championships were attended by Zoe Nisbet, Katelynn Bettinson, Jessie Radford, Sophia Gooley, Millie Crowe and Cindi Cook. All girls performed admirably and special mention should be made of Millie Crowe and Cindi Cook, who advanced to the North Coast Regional Championships, where Millie placed 6^th, which qualifies her to compete in the State Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek next Term. Congratulations and good luck, Millie.

Sam Watson represented the Far North Coast Zone at the North Coast Regional Touch Football Trials and was chosen as a reserve.

Kobi Courtney was chosen to represent the FNC Zone at the upcoming NC Regional Rugby Union Trials.

Aaron Latham will be representing the NC Region at the State Rugby League Trials in Sydney next week.

Millie Crowe and Jessie Radford attended the NC Regional Netball Trials, at very short notice this week, with both girls being chosen as ‘possible and probable', and congratulations to Jessie Radford, who will advance to the next trial.

Mr Tony Meldrum was back on the 21^st and 28^th June to complete our hockey skills training for Years 4-6. This is possible due to the Sporting Schools Initiative.

Our annual Athletics Carnival was postpone due to the weather. The new date is tomorrow Thursday 20^th July. Unfortunately due to reduced area on the High School oval we will only be able to have Years 3-6 competing at this carnival. All parents and carers are welcome at our carnival.

Hockey Skills

Wednesday 31^st May was the first day of our 3 day intensive hockey coaching with Mr Tony ‘Molly' Meldrum, the Hockey Development Officer for this area. This is a ‘Sporting Schools' initiative and Hockey is the focus for Term 2.

Years 4-6 participated in 30 minute drill/skill sessions and all students showed improvement after a relatively short time.

We are all looking forward to the next two sessions to be held on Wednesday 21st June and Wednesday 28^th June. See the album of photos in the Gallery from this first day of Hockey Skills.

The Creative Arts K–6 is one of six key learning area syllabuses for the primary curriculum. Art is an integral part of the Creative Arts K-6 syllabus, and is related to the different Stage a student is enrolled.

Early Stage 1 has been exploring many ways to make portraits.

Stage 1 has also been hunting down monsters in their Literacy and Visual Arts.

Stage 2 has been exploring Australian Landscapes.

Stage 3 students have been investigating Bushfire Mitigation in Geography and Visual Arts, and experimented with painting effects and collage.

Dance

Learning in Dance involves students exploring elements, skills and methods through the integrated practices of dance routine, performance and appreciation. The body is the instrument used to communicate and uses combinations of the elements of dance to express emotion and narrative through movement. There are a number of students who are part of our dance group. Every week we dance together and are excited for our upcoming performances.

3-6 dance students are in preparation for the Costal Kids performance held at Ballina RSL on 1^st August, daytime performance 9.45am to 2pm and the evening performance from 5.30pm.

The K-2 concert will be happening in Term 3 on the 5^th of September, and the junior dancers are looking forward to showcasing their talents.

5T performed a fantastic dance and chant sequence at 3-6 Assembly Friday 2^nd June. Without any music accompaniment they remembered the whole routine sequence and narrative. See the a video of their performance on our Newsletter .

Debating

Four Year 6 students attended the Premier Debating Challenge Workshop at Alstonville Primary School on Tuesday 16^th May. All students gained valuable debating skills including rebuttal and formation of an argument for either positive or negative teams. Finally, the students utilised these skills in an impromptu debate against Bonalbo Public School. These new found skills will be put to good use when they compete in the Premiers Debating Challenge later this term.

Open Girls Soccer Team

On Tuesday 16^th May the Open Girls Soccer Team competed in the PSSA Soccer Knockout at Saunders Oval. The girls won their game against Lennox Head Public School 10 to 0. All of the girls played exceptionally well, displaying great sportsmanship. Millie was nominated as the Player of the Match. The girls will be moving on to the next round and will be playing in the coming weeks. Go girls!! Well done to everyone who played and represented our school.

Open Boys Soccer Team

On Tuesday 16^th May the Open Boys Soccer Team also completed in the PSSA Soccer Knockout. The first game was against Lennox Head Public School and unfortunately we were defeated 6 to 2.

The second game was a ‘friendly' game against Ballina Public School. This game went in our favour 7 to 2.

Well done to the boys who represented Southern Cross School K-6 at this event as they displayed wonderful sportsmanship and skills in both games.

Stage 3 classes enjoyed working together on science experiments this week as a combined class. By dividing into groups and rotating around 4 separate science experiments in the ‘Change Detectives' topic the students have investigated, classified, and explained physical and chemical changes. Students then identify whether they are reversible or irreversible changes.

Ballina Surf Life Saving Club Donation

On Friday 21st of April three K-6 SRC members represented Southern Cross School at the Ballina Surf Life Saving Clubs (BSLSC) ‘Thank you Supporters and Sponsors function'.

The SRC students made a short speech and then proudly presented the President of the BSLSC Club with a cheque on behalf of Southern Cross School K-6 for over $450.
This money was raised from the SRC Red and Yellow Muftiday held at the end of Term 1.

All the girls said they had a fun evening. A special thank you to their parents for taking time out of the holidays to take the students to this function. Our SRC students conducted themselves in a very mature manner and were great ambassadors for the SRC and the Southern Cross School K-6.

Weather Update: Due to the increasing and uncertain weather conditions, possible flooding of roads, we are requesting parents to support the school by collecting their child as soon as they are able to. The school will remain operational until normal time with buses still running as per schedule.

Southern Cross School K-6 Canteen

Southern Cross School K-12 P&C is in the process of closing. Historically, the P&C has run the Southern Cross K-6 and 7-12 canteens. This arrangement will cease at the end of Term 1, 2017.

In Term 2, the Southern Cross Public School and Ballina Coast High School canteens will be operated by the schools. This will be a temporary measure pending a more permanent arrangement.

Canteen services will be available on Day 1, Term 2 and minimal interruption to canteen service is expected.

Bring Your Own Device

Southern Cross School K12 are in the processof developing a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program for 2014. This will enable students in years 7 to 12 to bring their own computing device to school and connect to our wireless network, to assist with their learning. For next year we are encouraging Year 9 students to bring their own device. At this stage, Years 7 and 8 students bringing their own device is optional but they will be able to use them in the classroom if they bring them.

Many parents have been aware of this trend in education and are busy purchasing devices for their student as part of Christmas and or birthday presents. Attached is a guideline of what to purchase if you are interested. It shows the various options but also recommends the Microsoft Surface tablet or similar as a good machine for a student.

The main point is the *connection to the wireless* and some cheaper options might not connect to our network.

Please read the paragraph on the bottom of page one of the attached document for this information.

We are holding an information night on Wednesday 27 November at 6pm in the 7-12 Library. This is the same night as the Year 6 into 7 Transition parent evening and we will discuss BYOD with any Year 6, 7 and 8 parents from 6pm until 6:30pm, then commence the Year 6 information evening. In the meantime I have started a discussion on our Facebook page. Please log on and have your say.

Schoolkids Bonus

Have you heard about the Schoolkids Bonus? It is a payment to help eligible families and students with the cost of primary and secondary school studies and it starts from January 2013.

The Schoolkids Bonus replaces the Education Tax Refund and it's simple: there's no need to collect receipts and claim it through your tax return.

If you are eligible, each year you will receive $410 a year for each primary student and $820 a year for each secondary student, with half paid in January and half paid in July. You can see the eligibility details here.

To ensure you receive the correct Schoolkids Bonus payment in January 2013, you must check and update your details by 31 December 2012 if:

you are or your child is starting primary school or secondary school in 2013
- your child's care arrangements or any other details have changed
  - you are or your child is finishing secondary study in 2012.
  You can update your details through Centrelink Online Services or by visiting a Centrelink-Medicare office.

Aboriginals Dad's Program mentoring partnership practice a range of outcomes for the young fathers, their children and families. These include young fathers, getting involved with their children, taking on roles of responsibility and leadership, learning to be a good Dad. Demonstrating changes in attitude leading to changes in lifestyle. Improving participation, nutrition in the home, families getting out and involved in the community.

State Athletes Success

Congratulations to the four Southern Cross K-12 students who travelled to Homebush to compete in thte NSWCHS State Athletic Championships. The four students were Sophia Hinrichsen, Angalee Narayan-Gray, Cori Hardy and Lachlan Copeland.

All four students performed admirably. Sophia gained a first place in the 400m and 6th in the 800 m (16 year girls), Angalee placed 14th in the 800 m and 8th in the steeplechase (16 year girls), Cori missed the finals but achieved a good time in the hotly contested 1500m walk and Lachlan gained 14th in the 200m (17+ boys). As a school we are very proud of all four athletes and there performances - well done.

Southern Cross K-12 is a uniform wearing school. This is the endorsed policy of our parent body. The majority of students and their families give this policy excellent support. I would remind all students and their families that only students with a signed parental/carer note will be excused form a detention for the non-wearing of uniform. Up until this time I have not been requiring staff to strictly enforce the schools uniform regarding footwear. However, I have become increasingly concerned about the flimsy structures of many of the shoes I see around the school. To this end, and with the full support and encouragement of the P&C, I will be requiring all staff to increase their vigilance in identifying and informing me and the parents of the student concerned. The policy states:

"Shoes should be black or white sports shoes with non-marking soles" for K-12 and an additional note is included for years 7-12 which states "(Leather uppers are required for practical subjects)" The practical subjects include all TAS subjects, all visual arts and music subjects, science and any lessons that may include occasional use of potentially dangerous items or on some excursions that may include construction sites, for example. It is likely on any given day that students in years 7-12 will need to have leather upper shoes for at least some lessons. Sports shoes will still be required for PE and Sport lessons

Students who are non-compliant will be managed in line with the school discipline policy which currently indicates that detentions will occur. Further, should the matter be related to a class OH&S entry issue, the situation may require the student to complete theory instead of the practical work and to complete the tasks in their own time. This is subject to the teacher's discretion.

This course of action will enable us to resolve important issues regarding our students' foot care, OH&S requirements and the general tone of our school. I thank all parents, carers and students in advance for their understanding and support in this matter.
